The Impact of Women in Lifestyle Medicine

International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout history and around the world. Lifestyle medicine focuses on preventing and treating disease using evidence-based changes in nutrition, physical activity, stress, sleep, relationships, and toxins. This blog is going to focus on a few of the many women who have transformed the field of lifestyle medicine.

Dr. Beth Frates: Pioneering Lifestyle Medicine Education

  • Dr Beth Frates

Dr Beth Frates is an award-winning Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and is the President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr Frates is a health and wellness coach and a trained psychiatrist. She is also the author of many articles and books on Lifestyle Medicine and has created a lifestyle medicine syllabus that can be used as a guide for other institutions to teach lifestyle medicine to their students. Dr Frates has also created a 1-year program that uses lifestyle medicine to aid patients who have had strokes to improve their health and recovery. 

Dr. Zoe Williams: Promoting Health and Wellness in Women and Teenagers

  • Dr Zoe Williams

Dr Williams is an NHS GP and also works on This Morning. She has a special interest in lifestyle medicine, women’s health, and sports medicine. She is a Clinical Advisor for the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and a National Advisor for Public Health England.   Dr Zoe Williams was also Amazon on the TV programme Gladiator.  Dr Williams has a passion for increasing activity in teenagers and has founded organisations such as Sportsgirls and FIT4LifeCIC. These organisations also help to improve young people’s general well-being and ambitions. Dr Williams is also a founding member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM). 

Dr. Shilpa Ravella: Advancing Nutritional and Gastrointestinal Health

  • Dr Shilpa Ravella

Dr Shilpa Ravella is a transplant gastroenterologist who is also very experienced in nutrition, the immune system, and the microbiome. Dr Ravella has written for newspapers and publications worldwide. Dr Ravella’s Ted-ED lesson “How the Food You Eat Affects Your Gut” has over 6 million views.  She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.
