International Tea Day
What is International Tea Day?
The United Nations (UN) created International Tea Day to honour the fact that after water, tea is the second most popular drink in the world. The UN also wanted consideration to be given to the social, ethical and ecological aspects of tea production. There are numerous types of tea with many health benefits. For example, nettle tea is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, flush out toxins and help to reduce fluid retention.
Discovering the World of Tea
It wasn’t until I read the book by Lisa See called “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” that I got an insight into the world of tea. It was much bigger and labour-intensive than I ever could have imagined. I then spent the past year looking at different Pu-erh tea offerings online, but didn’t know if I could trust that they were authentic.
Then over the Easter Holidays, while on a family Trip to Shrewsbury (not quite the Chinese mountains!), I stumbled upon a Chinese food stall in a market that sold authentic Pu-erh and other teas. I ordered some and excitedly waited. I was nervous as Pu-erh tea is supposed to have a strong earthy taste and I hoped that I liked the taste. Pu-erh tea is also known to be high in antioxidants, it aids digestion and is thought to be good for the immune system.
Experiencing the Ritual
I was given a small teapot that contained the Pu-erh tea and hot water. I was given another teapot that had hot water and was advised to let it brew for 3-5 minutes. After this I can drink the tea (in a small cup provided) and also continue to add hot water to the leaves approximately 3 more times. I was glad to find the tea to be delicious.
With the Chinese tea set, the whole moment seemed to be part of a tranquil ritual that created a sense of calm and wellbeing. I took this opportunity to ensure that I was fully present. My husband made sure the children were sorted, and I sat on a table by myself taking the moment in and feeling at peace.
Obviously, my children came over eventually and we talked about the tea and the book. Lisa See’s book mentions how the Chinese ethnic minorities involved in tea production face challenges relating to global demand, modernisation, and protecting their culture and heritage.
The Deeper Meaning of Tea
This year the UN is focussing on women involved in tea production and on making tea production sustainable for the environment, the people who drink the tea and the people who make the tea. Climate change is affecting the quality and amount of tea that is being produced. Tea can only be produced in a certain number of countries. With droughts, weather changes and floods this is becoming increasing difficult. The UN is utilising International Tea Day to increase public awareness and improve the current situation.
How You Can Celebrate International Tea Day
This International Tea Day, while you are having your usual cup of tea, think about where your tea comes from and the history of tea (which goes back more than 5000 years!). You may even get into a debate with your friends and family about how to make the perfect cup of tea.
