Smart Ways to Stay Safe in the Sun
The days are longer, and the temperature is up in the 20s, sometimes even in the 30s!
We spent winter and spring waiting and wishing for hotter weather and now everyone is
complaining about how hot it is. I love Summer. I love the green of the trees and all the
vibrant colours of the flowers. I feel happier when it’s light as I wake up and it stays light
well into the evening.
Why the Sun Is Important
Sunlight is important for our health. Sunlight helps to boost your mood by helping your
body produce serotonin, the “happy” hormone. Also, when you expose your skin to
sunlight, your body produces vitamin D. This is important for your bone health, immune
system and your heart.
Simple Sun Safety Tips
However, prolonged and unprotected exposure to sunlight can be detrimental to your
health. It can cause severe sunburn, increase your risk of skin cancer, damage your
eyes and cause premature aging by damaging collagen and other components of your
skin. Therefore, it is important to follow these simple tips to stay safe in the sun:
1. Plan Your Time in the Sun
The sun is at it’s strongest between 11am and 3pm. Try to find some shade or cool off indoors during this time.
2. Dress for Protection
Protect your skin and eyes: Wearing sunglasses, hats and light clothing that
covers your body helps protect your skin and eyes and can prevent you from
overheating.
3. Use Sunscreen the Right Way
It is important to regularly use sunscreen. This should be at least 30 SPF and should have UVB protection and a 4-star UVA
rating. Make sure you check your sunscreen is in date. If you are getting in and
out the sea, swimming or paddling pool, make sure that you reapply your
sunscreen even if it is water resistant.
4. Stay Hydrated
It may seem obvious but with iced lattes at your local cafe, a gin
and tonic in a terrace bar or an iced tea in a friend’s garden, your water intake
can actually decrease during the summer season. Caffeine and alcohol can act
as diuretics and dehydrate you. Therefore, try to alternate each drink with a glass
of water. Keep a glass of water or a water bottle on the table, in the car or in your
bag. There are many apps out there that can help you to track your water intake,
and you can also use them to set reminders for yourself.
Cool Down Effectively
I know that without my fan during the night I would not be getting any
sleep at all. You can place a bowl of ice in front of the fan so that it blows cold air
over you. Another way to cool down would be to fill a hot water bottle with cold
water.
